The available draught reduces with increases in outside air temperature and for generating enough draught, the exhaust gases have to be discharged at relatively high temperatures resulting in the loss of overall plant efficiency.

You need a dump zone. An aquastat somewhere on the boiler or strap-on on the supply piping very close to the boiler. This will run a zone or zones to prevent a boil-over. As has been said the draught needs to be investigated as well.

Is there anything I can do myself to stop draughts coming in around the flue of my boiler, as pictured? Aside from covering the cupboard in silt and occasionally blowing the door open, the draught hasn’t caused any major problems. It’s more of an annoyance. If it’s best left as is, please say. At my inspection today, I saw an oil-fired boiler and gas water heater venting into the same flue. The flue was relined in 2008 for the oil furnace and has the flexible steel liner. The gas water heater was just replaced in late 2011 and it appears the house has had this combination running for some time.
