Day 26 Heswall to Helsby

Thursday July 1st - 38 Miles - 2hr 31min.

Weather: Light Rain and Overcast

Accommodation: Colin and Jayne Swanston (Old Oxted)

Phil had a good start, although the weather was turning for the worst in the North West. He had been hoping to get as far as Preston today cycling through some of the most densely populated parts of the UK.

Sadly this was not to be. Just short of Runcorn, in a village called Helsby, Phil got a phone call at around 11:20 from his brother Colin telling that his mother, Odette Swanston had passed away. She was the inspiration for Phil's 5000 mile ride as she was been cared for in a home in Royston. Odette had been diagnosed with Alzheimers about six and a half years ago.

Phil decided to stop, hire a car and drive the 165 miles down the M6 / M1 down to Royston to meet up with his brother Colin. We later discovered that Odette had arranged her own funeral several years ago and the funeral is to be in two weeks time.

Our thoughts are with Phil and his family at this time.

Phil has sworn to carry on the journey, starting from Helby as soon as the funeral is over and hopes that the support he has had to date will continue on the remaining part of his ride.
